Chapter 20

Payback

They took a break for lunch, or rather, Ev did. Adam kept painting. Lingering in the doorway behind him, watching him work without wanting to intrude too much, Ev ate a sandwich.

A call came in over Adam’s tablet. Ev wasn’t sure if he should walk away and give Adam his privacy when he moved to answer.

He tapped on the button to answer and set down the brush in his hand. With a glance behind him, he twisted the screen slightly counterclockwise. The shift put a blank wall at Adam’s back, instead of the doorway where Ev stood.

The video call took over the screen.

A young guy with buzzed short black hair, light eyes, and black-and-grey ink tattoos all down both arms and up his neck was there, signing something. It had to be Rune, Ev realized with fascination.

“No, it’s not a bad time,” Adam said while signing back, his hands forming shapes with more than a little bit of ease. It occurred to Ev that he hadn’t asked if Adam knew how to sign to Rune also, but he guessed he had his answer. He wondered also how cozy their relationship was, some of his defenses rising. “I’m with a model, but he’s taking a break.”

Ev resented being referred to as a model, but then thought of all of his privacy concerns, and Adam’s self-professed dislike of sharing, and understood.

Adam gave a frustrated sort of expression, his lips getting tight. “I’m not avoiding him. I have something going on in my personal life and I need space.” The soft responses, almost too quiet for the tablet to pick up, continued to be mirrored with what Ev had to assume were the sign language counterparts.“Yes, I know he’s my friend, but he’s not always good at respecting my boundaries.” Adam waited a moment for the reply, then said, “It’s different with subs. I’m not his sub. I don’t have a contract with him.”

There was a longer pause. Adam looked away from the screen, hands resting on his hips. A knocking sound came from the mic as Rune hit his knuckles on the table in front of him, and Adam looked back down at the screen. “Sorry,” he apologized. “I can’t answer that. I promise I’ll explain once I’m able.” Rune tilted his head to the side and signed something. “I know what it sounds like. You’re still not getting an answer out of me.”

Rune was fairly good looking, Ev decided, but it didn’t turn him on. Instead, it made him angry. All he could do was imagine all of the kinky things he and Adam must have gotten up to together.

“Maybe,” Adam said, sounding a little tired. Then, “Yeah. I’ve gotta go. Bye.”

He tapped the screen and ran a hand over his mouth, keeping his back turned to Ev.

“What was that?” Ev blurted, wincing a little at the bite in his voice.

“A call from a friend.”

“Rune?”

Adam finally looked back at Ev, his expression masked, which only riled Ev’s defenses more.

“Yeah, actually. It was.
